United States Supreme Court Involved In adoption Case

The United States Supreme Court has become involved in the case of an adopted child whose biological father is trying to gain custody of her, according to the Denver Post. The Native American child was adopted by a white family in South Carolina after being born in Oklahoma. Her biological parents are both Cherokee. Her mother chose to give her up for adoption after her biological father left. He initially indicated that he wanted nothing to do with the child, but apparently changed his mind after learning that she was to be adopted. The case is complicated because of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, which was designed to protect Native American families who had their children forcibly removed from them, and adopted by non-Indian families.
