To shed some light on the nature of these risks, below are some of the more important facts about Halloween pedestrian accidents to be aware of. Understanding these facts can help you identify the best measures to take in order to celebrate a safe Halloween this year – and every year.

Halloween Pedestrian Accidents: The Prevalence & Primary Causes

Although the facts about Halloween pedestrian accidents can be scary, there are ways to avoid these accidents, a Littleton car accident lawyer explains.

On Halloween, kids are about two times more likely to be the victims of pedestrian accidents – This is compared to their risk of being in a pedestrian accident on any other day of the year. Although this fact may be surprising on the surface, it makes far more sense when considering the fact that there are more young child pedestrians (and impaired drivers) out on the streets on Halloween.

  • The risk of these accidents is the highest during the late afternoon/evening hours – Specifically, children have the highest risk of being hit by a car on Halloween between the hours of about 4 pm and 10 pm. Within this time frame, the hour of 6 pm to 7 pm is associated with the highest risk.
  • About 1 in every 4 fatal pedestrian accidents is caused by an impaired driver – Tragically, drunk drivers contribute to about 25 percent of the deadly pedestrian accidents that occur on Halloween.
  • Less than 1 in 3 Halloween pedestrian accidents occurs at an intersection or crosswalk – This fact underscores how a lack of knowledge about pedestrian safety among children can end up contributing to these accidents. This is because, when pedestrian accidents occur at places other than designated crossings for pedestrians, there is a far greater likelihood that the pedestrians darted out in front of cars, attempted to jaywalk, or were otherwise not following safety procedures/the law.
  • Children between 12 and 18 years old are those who are most often killed in Halloween pedestrian accidents – Nearly 50 percent of all deadly child pedestrian accidents that occur on Halloween have victims between the ages of 12 and 18 years old. About 40 percent of the victims of these fatal accidents are between 7 and 12 years old.
