Average trucker sleep time – Although the average adult requires between 7 and 9 hours of undisturbed sleep to feel rested, researchers have found that the average truck driver tends to get, at most, only 5 hours of sleep on any given night (or rest period).

  • Impacts of sleep deprivation – Sleep deprivation can have some serious impacts on commercial drivers’ abilities to focus, be alert and respond appropriately when behind the wheel. In fact, some studies have shown that substantial loss of sleep can have the same impacts on people’s cognitive abilities as being drunk. In particular, it’s been found that:
    • After sleeping for only 5 hours for two consecutive nights, drivers’ performance behind the wheel starts to rapidly deteriorate.
    • After no sleep for a consecutive 24 hours, the impairments that drivers exhibit are equivalent to those displayed by people who have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.10. This is more than the legal limit for people with standard driver’s licenses (as their limit is 0.08), and it’s more than DOUBLE the legal limit for commercial drivers (as their limit is 0.04).
  • The Bottom Line about Trucker Fatigue

The bottom line about trucker fatigue is that:

    • It’s a prevalent and deadly problem that can be prevented.
    • While federal HOS regulations are intended to curb trucker fatigue, drivers and trucking companies have ways to trying to get around the rules, doing so to line their pockets at the expense of public safety.
    • When trucker fatigue is a factor in causing truck accidents, injured parties may have claims against both the negligent drivers and trucking companies that employ them.
